Proctored Examinations

A common concern of teachers is being reasonably sure that the student whose name is on an examination is actually the student who wrote the exam. On campus this assurance is gained by having students write exams in class while the teacher is watching. The online learning environment, however, makes this a little more challenging, but no less important. The solution to this dilemma is to have the online students do exams under the direct supervision of a proctor.

What is a proctor?

A proctor is a person who watches you take an exam, signs a statement that he/she watched you do it under the conditions specified by the teacher (Ex: notes only, no text; or no notes, no text, etc.), collects the exam from you after the specified amount of time has passed, and submits the exam to your PUC CyberCourses teacher. You do not handle the exam once the proctor has collected it from you when the specified amount of time set for the exam has passed.

Who can be a proctor?

For PUC CyberCourses, PUC approves proctors who meet these conditions:

  • The proctor must NOT be related to the student.
  • The proctor should be a certified teacher, an ordained minister, a librarian, or an employee of Pacific Union College or a commercial tutoring service (Ex: Sylvan Learning Centers, etc.).
  • Your PUC CyberCourses teacher must be able to communicate with the proctor prior to the proctored exam to give him/her instructions about the exam and the conditions under which it must be done.

How do I arrange for a proctor?

If you know a certified teacher, ordained minister, or trained librarian who is not related to you, ask the person if he/she is willing to serve as a proctor. Otherwise, contact a commercial tutoring service in your area and make arrangements through that business. You must then submit a completed Proctor Application that includes the proposed proctor's signature and contact information. Because this form must have a signature on it, you must print out the form, fill it out, and return it to your teacher either by FAX or by mail. (See the course web site, or contact your teacher, for the FAX number and/or mailing address.)

Do I have to pay a proctor?

Paying a proctor is your responsibility if he/she charges a fee. If your proctor does not charge you, as a courtesy you may want to pay the postage or FAX charges that the proctor will incur when submitting the assignment to your PUC CyberCourses teacher.
